From July 16^th to August 16^th 2017, a group of students and faculty from Zhejiang University School of Medicine went to University of British Columbia(UBC) in Canada to participate in Vancouver Summer Program(VSP). The exchange group consisted of Professor Hu Ji’an, the deputy secretary of the Party committee of Stomatology Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang University of Medicine, Teacher Jia Honglei, the deputy secretary of the League of School of Medicine and 41 medical undergraduates.

Over 2,200 students from more than 40 countries all over the world participated in UBC 2017 VSP and were warmly welcomed by UBC faculty. The VSP welcome party was held in UBC Thunderbird Stadium in the afternoon on July 17^th, starting with a wonderful live show of a jazz band and DJ’s fantastic music. Grace Wong, UBC International Short Study Programs Manager, Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, delivered a speech. Other UBC faculty from different departments also showed welcome and wished all the participants a great experience in the following 30 days.

From July 18^th to August 10^th, 40 undergraduates studied in the Course Package of Medicine and Dentistry. They were impressed by the well-organized classes and teaching methods of UBC as a top university as well as its idea of humanity.  Students not only acquire knowledge, experience Canadian culture, but also build friendship and strengthen ability in problem solving, independent thinking, communication and team cooperation.

During spare time, students launched various social activities in the theme of medical and health. Firstly, they traced hierarchical medical system in Canada and conducted a relevant survey in the community as well as interviewed Doctor Ran Goldman, a pediatrician in BC Children’s Hospital and alumna Ren lian’er and Tang xiao’li. Furthermore, they learned medical education system about overseas universities and discussed thoroughly with Professor Claudia Krebs, the academic manager in Anatomy and Professor Matthew Tinney, the manager of UBC Body Program. It’s noteworthy that besides anatomy courses, UBC Body Program will hold commemoration every September on campus to show respect and gratitude to the body donators, which has great impact on medical students to build a positive attitude towards treating and helping patients in the future.

The VSP has broadened students’ horizons, enriched their experience and improved their innovation capacity and practice ability, laying a good foundation in facing challenges of globalization. After a month of study, students noticed the huge differences between China and Canada in aspects of nature, history and culture. At present, they will make every effort to study hard and strive for the medical and health services of the motherland.
